They achieved that feat just months after Thomas Tuchel was appointed following his dismissal from Ligue 1 giants PSG.

Tuchel had guided the French club to the Champions League final in 2020, but like defender Silva was deemed surplus to requirements at the Parc des Princes.

The pair are now hoping to navigate Chelsea through another successful European campaign, but know it will be an almighty challenge to repeat their successes of last season.

Taking to social media after their win, Silva shared an image of PSG’s feared front three of Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, with a message to his compatriot which read: “I hope that we don’t come up against you anytime soon @neymarjr. God forbid.”

Chelsea continue their own Champions League campaign against Juventus on Wednesday night and Tuchel admitted that now they are one of the top contenders, it’s a very different challenge.

“It’s hard to be seen as an underdog when you just won the title but I think we came from a role not as the favorites last season, we grew in confidence and got better in every match,” he explained in his pre-match press conference.

“And maybe we were seen as contenders very late in the competition which can sometimes help. Now it is, of course, easy to make us the favorites.

“We have the experience that there’s a higher value to play against us, there’s a higher motivation to play against us. We have to accept this, it’s our fault: we have won this competition.”

He continued: “It’s no secret we like this role to come from an outsider or challenger for this title, which we still are.

“I don’t think we are the favourites but we showed everybody the performances we’re capable of.

“And that’s now on us, it’s very important that we make ourselves free from these expectations, and these expectations do not become our expectations and we stay realistic that we have absolutely clear from us what we demand from us.”
