Lesley Manville has signed a deal to play Princess Margaret in The Crown and admits that she could not be happier after landing the role.
The actress has been confirmed to play the part of the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and the only sibling of Queen Elizabeth II, in the fifth and final season of the Netflix show, which will see Imelda Staunton play the Queen.
Manville will follow in the footsteps of Vanessa Kirby and Helena Bonham Carter in the role of the Queen’s sister.
In a statement posted on Twitter, she said: “I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret. The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t want to let the side down.
“Furthermore, to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”
Lesley Manville is probably known for her frequent collaborations with director Mike Leigh. More recently, she starred in the BBC sitcom Mum (above), where she played Cathy, a recently widowed suburban mother.
The fourth season of The Crown, featuring Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher and Olivia Colman returning as the Queen, is expected to air later this year.
