The reason, in his opinion, is that the team needs him and that Ronald Koeman himself has made it clear that he could do with him.
Víctor Font, one of the three candidates to become Barcelona’s new president, insisted on the immediate incorporation of centre-back Eric García (Manchester City), a signing that has been requested by coach Ronald Koeman, as he recalls.
At a press conference on Saturday, ahead of the match against Athletic Club, the Dutch coach admitted that Barca “are not in a position to win many things”.
Font believes, in a statement sent from his candidacy, that Koeman’s words “show the depth of the lack of a sporting project” that Barcelona have been suffering from for some time.
“One way to address as far as possible his reflection would be to incorporate now, as a matter of urgency, Eric García to strengthen the backline of the team,” he said.
The businessman, who is fighting for the presidency alongside Joan Laporta and Toni Freixa in elections to be held on 7 March, recalled that both the coach and the technical secretariat are asking for the contract at an important moment in the season.
“The Cup is entering the decisive phase, the Champions League is approaching and Madrid are faltering in LaLiga. Between all of us, we have to help to have the best possible team to aspire to titles this year,” he said.
